EVALUATION: SEE SECTION BELOW THIS PARAGRAPH

The last section (which people may not have yet) is the Evaluation. There is a summary of what it should involve below:

Testing your product is an important part of your evaluation. You will need to ensure that your product does not get damaged before the moderator assesses it. You should try to set up some field tests, which as far as possible replicate the real use of a product.

Question people who would be in your target market about their opinion of your product. Analise their answers and present this information using graphs and text. Consider:

· Do you find the product easy to use?

· Does it function in the way intended?

· What do you think about the style of the product?

· Do you like or dislike any features? Explain why.

· Would you purchase this product and if so what would you expect to pay?

· What are the main advantages or disadvantages compared to similar product?

Specification

You should test your product against the original specification. A simple chart might help.

Modifications

Suggest ways in which your product could be improved. The first thing to do is respond to the tests and other people’s comments. Major problems with your design do not mean that you will gain a poor grade. If there are major problems with your design then you need make serious suggestions for improvements and might need detailed drawings or models.

Modifications for Production.

Make suggestions about the processes that might be used if your design was commercially produced.

Ask your self the following questions:

· Would they use the same materials as I used?

· Would the construction methods be the same?

· How would the surface finishes differ?

· Can I make design changes that would reduce production costs?

· Is there scope for automating parts of the manufacturing process?

· Can I reduce the number of different components in my design?

Just a reminder of what I outlined in class and wrote on the board as I was explaining the homework; do up to and including the neat drawing with dimensions (measurements). Use the British Standard dimensions, i.e. make the measurements in mm not cm.

Also, make sure you have done the corrections / completions which I highlighted on the sheets in pink!

Please take your folder home and do the sections marked in pink which you didn't manage to do in the catch-up session(s) you attended. If you didn't attend a catch-up session, a letter will go home explaining the same... a situation which, as I am sure you will agree, is easily avoided.

A recurring gap which a lot of people seem to have is the different stages of designing when designing in 2D Design or Paintshop Pro. You need at least 4 initial ideas for each object... the dvd cover and the clock. To explain what I am talking about, you can see my example if you click here.

You can either use your finished design on the computer and do variations on colour, typefaces, etc. or you can open the image (or Google and find the original image you started with) and do variations of placing, typefaces, colours, etc. (a better option) as I did in my example here.

Another noticeable gap is the mention of manufacturing processes in your Case Studies. A plastic DVD box is injection moulded (examples of a mould on a web page if you click here)
and the printing is, on a large run, usually 4 colour chromolithography. There is a good, clear explanation of different methods of printing dvd covers if you click here.

I am VERY heartened by the making that is happening. What I have seen so far is of good quality.
Don't forget what I said about the final 3D clock... if it is too small, then make it anyway and use it as a test ground for adding more/different pieces, etc.
If you feel your clock could be a little more complex, then by all means add some more pieces.

For Tuesday, make sure you are all done up to and including the Specification. The order of everything is the order on the sheets I have given you. If you are not done by then, it will mean being in the classroom at either Wednesday lunchtime or after school because we must have it all wrapped up now...

Please make sure that, by Tuesday 13th January, you have the clock and the dvd cover PRINTED OUT.
It is quite OK to do this at home on your own printer.

TUESDAY IS THE BIG DAY AND IT IS ESSENTIAL THAT YOU HAVE THE PIECES OF PAPER WITH YOU. YOU WILL NOT BE ABLE TO GO TO THE COMPUTER ROOM TO PRINT THEM OUT!

If you have done everything, then make sure your folder work is up to scratch. If anything is missing as a group, it is the different versions of dvd covers done in 2D Design... for example, experimenting with different fonts, different colour balances, different images, etc.

We have some great ideas and I am looking forward to seeing them in 3D.

I am collecting in your folders and you will have them back on Tuesday.

COURSEWORK MAJOR PROJECT

This holiday is always an excellent time (actually, a CRUCIAL time) to look through a folder and add value to the hard work you have already put in. It is an awesome thought, but work done between now and January can bump students up by a couple of grades!

Of course read my comments, that's what they are there for, but I'm sure you will use your own initiative and use the printed sheets with my comments on. Did I miss anything? The fact I haven't written a comment doesn't mean your sheet is no good... but it doesn't mean it's done, either, of course... it might just mean I missed it...

Perhaps... because...
It might be in the wrong place. This is a VERY good time to get your folder in order.

Perhaps it's printed off and not in your folder yet? Perhaps you haven't had a chance to print them off yet? I share your frustration with the printers and, as you know, this makes it so important to get the work printed off AS SOON AS POSSIBLE... it is scary to think that your GCSE could fail because of those flimsy, temperamental, abused, over-used, paper-jammed, out-of-ink unreliable plastic boxes people call printers.

Some common areas of gaps in folder work:

1) Download the photo of your white card clock from yr11.info. Printed in black and white will do. Pleeeease annotate it. Say whether it would be stable, serve its intended purpose, be easy/cheap to make, easy to be assembled by the recipient, etc.

2) Different designs for the dvd cover. The exam board has hinted at the importance of a good range of designs... this is why I keep banging on about it. ESSENTIAL. If it would help, email the design home and, if you have some kind of graphics package on your computer (even something that came free with your camera or scanner just for snapshot photo enhancements), do different colour schemes, fonts, etc. Even if you haven't, just print it off a few times and hand-draw different parts, cut and paste words and stick them on.... ANYTHING!

3) STEP-BY-STEP guide of how you would make the dvd cover / clock (preferably both, clock essential).

You may be a little marvel and have done all these... or perhaps you may be a little marvel who hasn't quite got round to this yet.

Developments of the clock designs (see information on the printed sheets).

Working Drawing (done with a ruler, 3RD Angle Orthographic projection (see link here for an example), with dimensions... that is, measurements.)

Plan of Making (see the printed sheet for information). This should include at least the following:

Draw the clock parts in 2D Design
Adapt the DVD cover so that it can be used on the clock face
Copy and paste the DVD cover artwork onto the drawing in 2D Design of the clock face
Print out the design
Paste the A3 paper onto card
Cut out the parts
Slot together and/or join the parts

Oh... and I can't remember... I'm not sure, but did I possibly mention ANNOTATED?!?

The new work to be completed:
Don't forget those developments of your chosen initial idea. Let's see different ways of fastening the card (slots, velcro pads, etc) explored, along with variations of colour schemes, different clock number types (if you are using numbers; you might just be using markers for the 3,6,9,12) etc, etc. Refer to the pictures of your white models uploaded on photobucket.com in the lordbills folder which you will find if you click here.

Developments are a bit like trying out different trim, interiors, door fastenings, colour schemes etc on a new model of car. To quote the marking sheets in your folder...

Research the materials that you could use for your product and present these on your paper. Find out if there are any pre-manufactured components that you could use in your product, for example joggle eyes, velcro pads and different types of card and paper.

Please take your card clocks home, disassemble them and put the parts opened out on paper. They are in a large card box on a shelf in C10.

It would be great if you managed to download the picture of your clock model, print them off and put them on an A3 sheet (um, possibly annotated as well...) but not essential; you can do that at school.

All the best, and perhaps relax a little now and then during the week off... it would be so easy to get to the time we come back and suddenly realise you had spent ALL the time working on your Graphics folder...

Four more designs for the clock by next Tuesday, please. Really let your hair down and be creative about these... pretend it is an Art project.

Use collage or paint, if you want. Charcoal, ballpoint pen, fineliner.... anything. Let's see something that is really exciting to look at.

Be free with lines and smudgy, if you like... or you may want to collage different colours and textures and then paint on top... or you may like to do one totally differently with a pen ruler, for example.

The only way this homework can be 'wrong' is if you are too timid in your approach!

Two pieces of news...

Firstly, I have persuaded the Powers That Be that surely we only need to do two products and could they please be the dvd case and the clock.... which are the two we are working on. Basically, this gives you a brilliant start to the year if you are falling behind a little and means things are totally solvable at this stage.

Secondly, I am putting all our bits and pieces in one place so that we don't have to scrabble around the main tech website. I have got some of it (the main parts) transferred over already. The homework blog is a bright red link, so you can't miss it!

I have also added something else; you can now see your individual profile online (it is passworded, the current password being the word brill. This will change once we have information about your work up there). Comments on your work will be available to look at as soon as it is written and this gets over the problem of both you and myself having the same notes about your work.

By the time you come back in September, you will have:

Research for flat-pack desk-top items.

Four Preliminary Designs for the flat-pack clock.
Don't forget about what I said regarding drawing the line for your designs; think about the line first anf then put it down with great confidence! The actual line may be done quickly, but you will place it better.
If you find the line is not what you want, don't worry, just put another down in the place where you want it.... and so on.
I am including a specimen page I have done to give an idea of this:

For some reason, when you click on this for the larger image you may find it gets stuck there... apologies... I'm not clever enough to sort that one out!

You will also have a page of research on how to connect the components and sides without the use of glue. The whole asembly will either fold out from flat or use tabs and slots to fix the parts.
You will have two working card examples of fixings which actually slot together.
You will have developments of one of your preliminary ideas where you explore how the design will fit onto it.
You will also have a good, finished, coloured example of your final design.

Four examples of flat-pack desk-top items, please. On A3.
These may take the form of pen pots, folding calendars, stationery holders, etc.
Annotate your examples with:

Whether you think it is able to be posted easily.
Whether you think it is able to be assembled easily.
Whether tape, glue or some other fixing device is needed... and if it is, do you think/ know that it is included?
What its function is. Is it sent to the client out of the company's act of kindness because they feel the sales executive needs yet another calendar, or is it sent, for example, to keep the sender's company name and logo at the front of the client's mind every time (s)he checks the date??
Whether it works regarding its intended purpose.
What its 'feel' is... is it quirky, funny, there to impress... or what?

The work so far:
Spidergram
(film genres, target audience, promotional items that might be sold or given away when a film comes out). This is called an analysis. Use coloured pencil behind the words... it will really lift it and make it look finished! Have at least 20 'bubbles'.

Research Plan
(what you are going to research, where, and spaces for ticking off whether you have done it). This is in the form of a table. if you still need to do it and you are not sure how to draw tables, you may do it by hand PROVIDING YOU USE A RULER!! The more different places you research from, the better the grade you get in that section.

Dvd Research
Try and get at least six examples of DVD covers (scanned in from real ones or from Google) and annotate them. Good annotation will include: a brief description of what it is made from and whether you think it is successful of not.

Case Study
Picking one example of a Dvd and its cover, put an image of it on a page and annotate it. This should be more detailed than the six examples of designs you annotated earlier. Say:how it would be produced in industrywhat you like about different parts of the design (the font, colours, image, logo, etc)what you would do differently.

Questionnaire
At least 10 questions. These may be either multichoice or yes/no questions. You can also show people examples of, say, 3 dvd covers and ask them for example which one they feel would be most appropriate for the project you are thinking of doing.

The small-scale models of dvd covers
These are the ones you created in 2d design with Mrs. Reed. These should be mounted on a sheet of A3 and annotated with a brief descrption of how they were created and what situation they would be used in.

Now we come to the 'Nice If You Could Do It But Not Essential' section...
A design brief... something along the lines of: 'I am going to design and make a dvd cover for a film 'The Key'. The dvd will be given away free with a Sunday newspaper and magazine'.

At some point, you will need to bring in some money for a flip folder. I will keep you posted on that one. They are approximately £3.

For Monday, please bring in pieces of magazine picture, fabric if possible, if possible pieces of coloured paper (but neither of the latter essential) which are predominantly one colour. For example, if you choose blue, you may find yourself bringing in sea, sky, an advert for denim jeans, etc. You can bring in colours related to the colour you have chosen as well, such as (in the case of blue for example) purple flowers or blue-green pieces, for example.

If for example you picked red, you might find a sunset, a brick building, a lipstick, etc.

Find out as many different ways as possible of joining two pieces of card together... they can range from the commonplace, every day methods to the downright unusual! I shall be explaining more during the lesson on Wednesday the 30th of January. Methods might include elastic bands and nuts and bolts, even, as well as the more ordinary glue and tape.

Write or print out on either A3 or A4. You must have at least 4 illustrations to clarify some of the techniques, though. This homework will be as much about presentation as content, and the marks will reflect that.

Do a mood board for your idea for a leaflet display stand. Have ideas for the colour schemes... for example, if you are going to do blue and orange, have pictures of a tangerine, carrot, a face with a tan, a sunset, etc etc. if looking at blue (for example,) you could have sea, berries, textiles which are predominantly blue, etc.
Also, have ideas for the 'mood' (goodness, it is a mood board after all...!) or atmosphere. If you are doing a leaflet for a game about zombies in a desolate city, you may find My Little Pony doesn't quite have the right atmosphere, but you might find that Marilyn Manson does, for example. The more stuff (relevant material, that is), the better the grade.

Go though the homeworks and make sure everything is done. it is your responsibility to go through the green drawer in the Graphics room room C10 and see what is missing.

Also...get to the photographs we took during lesson by clicking here.
Put it into a graphics program like Photoshop or a photo enhancing program that might be in Windows or which came with your scanner or digital camera.
Enhance and individualise it by using your program. Add a maximum of four words.

Bring in some beads, fabric, foil, etc which you can use in your scanned label. You will be creating a design on paper as a collage and then scanning it in. You will be producing a drinks label, so please bring in colours which will go with your drinks label design.
Ps... you will notice some drinks labels creating a bit of an eyeful on the GCSE Graphics page!

You MUST have by then:

1) the Spidergram/'Brainstorm' you did for the last homework
2) the Design Brief for the sports drinks label project
3) the Specification for the sportdrinks label project

It is important they are done as the next step is drawing the Initial Designs and those must relate to the Spidergram, Design Brief and Specification.

The ‘Specification’ is usually a list of points, with each point referring to your research. The specification needs to be based on your research.

Below is an example of a Specification (NOT for a drinks label!!):

1. The materials I will use will be compressed polystyrene, pine and MDF .

2. The overall shape will depend on the shape of the room.

I will base the dimensions on statistics worked out as part of my research.

3. I intend to use a colour scheme based on red and blue because these are the most popular colours.

4. The item will stand on a desk or be fixed on a wall.

5. I will need the following tools/machines to manufacture my item: a lathe, drilling machine, hand files, a vacuum former.

6. The item is aimed at the 12-15 age group as my research suggests this would be the most successful market.

Make sure the blister pack colour/graphics is finished and do a 'spidergram' or 'brainstorm' of a drinks bottle. it is for a high energy sports drink and please do sections on 1) possible flavours, 2) possible names for the product, 3) the target market, 5) possible shapes for the label, 6) the 'feel' of the label, that is, whether it is for example subtle and sophisticated, brash and bright, has a luxury look, looks like an economy product, etc etc.

You will find an example of a spidergram in the section on the GCSE Graphics page which shows 'Exemplar' Work. The spidergram is the 14th example down. Click on the picture to enlarge it so that you can read it.

Write at least 200 words on the industrial processes used for making a blister pack.
Include at least three photographs, diagrams or drawn illustrations: it could be a mixture of any of those three.
You may put it into any format you like... bullet points, a comic strip, a step by step guide, a piece of prose, etc.

Do a mood board (mounted on sheet(s) of A4 would be a good idea) of pictures of packaging which has a transparent window so that the contents can be seen. Examples might include: Dolls boxes, model/toy car boxes, Easter eggs, etc etc. Go for a minimum of ten examples.

Actual packaging could also be included if it wasn't too big and bulky!

Following the lesson we have just done on 'Crating', Either 1) draw an object in 2 Point Perspective using Crating or 2) one in 2 Point Perspective without using Crating.

Remembering the example I showed you in class, imagine where the light is coming from and use coloured pencil to show the dark, midtone and light sides. Each side will be coloured ('Rendered') with a different amount of shading (or 'Tone'), the side hidden from the light most being the darkest. Use two colours on top of each other.

Use A4 paper with punched holes so that it may be put in your small A4 folder.
